Don’t miss Boxcar Theatre’s Special Engagement performances of
Goodnight Desdemona
(Good Morning Juliet)

October 3 – 11, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 26 Sept 2011 – Boxcar Theatre announces five special engagement performances of Ann-Marie MacDonald’s rollicking comedy Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) to accompany the opening their 2011-2012 season.  Directed by Sarah Nagelvoort in her directing debut with Boxcar.  This performance accompanies Boxcar’s production of Desdemona: a play about a handkerchief by Paula Vogel directed by Artistic Director Pete Matthews. In this spirited comedy, Constance Ledbelly deciphers a cryptic manuscript and is pulled into the early source for Othello and Romeo and Juliet.   With the aid of compulsively tragic Desdemona and Juliet, Constance dodges sword fights, boudoirs, jealousy, and time warps. Ann-Marie MacDonald provides a captivating revision of these Shakespearean tragedies turned comedies as we follow Constance on her quest of self-discovery.”I am thrilled with the opportunity to direct Goodnight Desdemona. Boxcar is providing a wonderful artistic opportunity to accent their main stage production,” says Ms. Nagelvoort.  Ms. Nagelvoort’s credits include assistant directing Titus Andronicus at Cal Shakes, and assistant directing Tall Tales at Marin Theatre Company. She is working with a group of young, up-and-coming artists to create a vibrant production that will be performed on the set of Boxcar’s main stage show Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief. “We chose Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) because, like the main stage show, it is a new interpretation of Shakespeare by a modern female playwright. It was also the perfect play to allow a group of young artists a chance to get creative and practice their craft,” said Ms. Nagelvoort.

Molly Kruse is the endearingly awkward Constance Ledbelly, a nervous academic that finds herself thrown into the world of Othello and Romeo and Juliet.  The rest of the cast is challenged with playing no less than three characters each.  Alex Lenarsky boldly takes on the roles of Iago, Romeo, and Ghost. Desdemona, Mercutio, and others are portrayed with strength by Rachel Jacobs. Max Curnow tackles Othello, Tybalt, and the manipulative Professor Claude Night.  This strong cast is finished off by Christina Melocik portraying a surprisingly stubborn Juliet, and student.  Ms. Kruse, Mr. Lenarsky, and Mr. Curnow were most recently seen at the Livermore Shakespeare Festival.  Ms. Jacobs is recently back from a performing tour in Hong Kong and Ms. Melocik has returned to the stage after extensive video work.  This marks the first Boxcar appearance for the entire cast.

I am excited to announce that I will be directing a production of Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by Ann-Marie MacDonald at Boxcar Theatre which will open this October.  This production will be a festival show that will accompany Boxcar’s mainstage production of Desdemona: A Story About a Handkerchief by Paula Vogel on which I am assistant director and ASM.
